Six steps to develop the motivation to rocket to your true goals
So how do you create and maintain a state of being motivated? It's a given that most of us want to achieve many large and small goals in life. And we often blame our lack of 'motivation' for our inability to get to those objectives. Here are six things you can do that will create the right mindset while building up your motivation. 1. Take stock of yourself. What is it that you truly desire? What gives you a sense of meaning and purpose? What makes you joyful and gives you a feeling of fulfillment and motivation? Here is a simple 30 second exercise that may help you uncover some answers to these questions. Ready? Grab a pen and paper. I'm going to ask you a question. When you read that question, quickly put down on paper your thoughts as they occur. Your time limit is just 30 seconds! DO NOT stop to think! Just write down whatever comes to mind. Here's the question: In just 30 seconds or less, without any attempt to think about it...What 3 goals do you want most in your life right now? Just write down the 3 top things that pop into your head. You may be surprised to discover that what you have written down in this 'non-thinking' state is quite different from what you would otherwise say you want to achieve! These are the three things you need to set goals around right now. They are what will get your motivation going. 2. Unleash your imagination. Now that you know what you truly want, take the time to create a vision around them. How? Just do what you did naturally as a child...start dreaming about those goals and what you would like to do about them. Dream about the joy you will have when you achieve the goals and how you can enjoy the process of getting there. And never mind if much of it does not seem to make sense right away. All of it goes towards building your motivation. 3. Set concrete goals. It is time to take your vision and break it down into specific goals. Look at what you ultimately want to achieve. Make it as specific as possible. If it is a money goal, for instance, write down a specific number for the annual income you want to achieve and a specific number for the networth you want to have. Clear goals help motivation. Map out a rough sketch of how you will get there. It doesn't really matter if all the steps are not clear right now. As you take one step, the next will become clear to you. Contrary to what many preach, having every detail of how to get there clearly mapped out is NOT important for most personal achievement. What is important is to focus on the END result. All you need to do then is to decide on the first steps you must take. The rest will follow. 4. Accept your personal responsibility to make things happen. This is a huge stumbling block for many people. They seem to think that if they have a goal (even a vague one), they will get there 'somehow', 'someday'. The truth is that it is YOUR responsibility to MAKE it happen. Sure, having a goal will allow you to see potential opportunities that you may have missed otherwise. But it is up to you to work at those opportunities and turn them into the kind of results you want. What can be better motivation than knowing you can make it happen? 5. Develop excellent work habits. Many of us have, over the years, gotten into the habit of doing sloppy work. You must learn the art of thinking through your tasks, setting priorities and working at it in a systematic manner. See our home page for a proven plan to make this happen. 6. Pay attention and make sure you enjoy the journey. Be conscious of what you are doing and why. Just this one thing can do wonders for your productivity, if you implement it. Quit going through your day on automatic, like a zombie. Consciously bring energy and excitement to whatever you are doing. Sure, you may hate your boss and your company. But remember, this journey is about YOU, not your boss. Think about the outcomes you want and remember that all your actions are geared towards getting you there as efficiently as possible. This is a key part of self motivation. You might discover that when you bring vigor to your work, you will transform you work into something you actually like. And that's a key part of becoming successful, because if you dislike every moment of your work, you probably won't make it. As you can see, it's not that difficult to get into and maintain a state of motivation. Just go for it!
