You can develop your time management skills to create more leisure hours

Most of us wish we had better time management skills so that we can get more done in our day and have more leisure time for ourselves.

A lot of space on this site is devoted to getting more done. Let's take a look at the other side - gaining more free time so that you can read, spend time with your family, go to the beach and do other fun things you really want.

This is really about developing better time management skills. To start with, list out everything you would do if you had an extra hour a day. Then list out what you would do if you had an extra two hours a day. Do the same with four hours and six hours.

Now you have a fair idea what you want to do if you had extra time on your hands.

Here's the crucial part of this exercise...carry a small notebook or even a piece of paper with you for one whole day.

Every 30 minutes, make a note of everything you did during the pervious 30 minutes along with an estimate of the time it took you for each item. This is an important part of your new time management skills repertoire.

Continue doing this the WHOLE DAY till you retire to bed at night.

Identify and add up all the minutes you did NOT use for one of two things:
1. Your work and other normal responsibilities
2. Daily essentials like eating, using the toilet, etc.

Basically, total the time you used in activities like watching TV, checking your email (non-work related...maybe stuff like checking out that funny video someone sent you), and so on. The idea is to nail down the total minutes you consume in wasteful activities.

Are you surprised at the amount of time you waste? Most people are.

Next step - apply this amount of time to the items on the lists you previously made. For instance, if your wasted time totals two hours, commit to getting rid of the time leeches and use that extra time to do some of the items on the 'what would you do if you had two extra hours a day' list. And maybe from your other lists as well.

Remember, you probably have deeply ingrained habits that cause you to waste time. So you will very likely encounter stiff resistance from within to stopping those activities and replacing them with your preferred activities.

If you choose not to make this shift, you would have wasted all the effort you took on this exercise. You don't want that to happen, do you?

Regardless of internal resistance, persist with determination. You will find your quality of life improving dramatically.

Viola! Your new time management skills have automagically given you the time you need to do some of the things you really want to do! Isn't that exciting?
